Youth Rangers in Elandsvlei

Elandsvlei Conservancy was a programme to target and engage young people.  Their Youth Rangers are an active bunch of children between the ages of 12 and 18, co-ordinated by Tegz Watson.  They meet every Friday night, and their objective is to have fun outdoors.

A ball, a field and high hopes

“Please Miss Michelle, ask Miss Myrna if we can also play soccer on the field where our fathers play.”  Several small hopeful soccer stars wanted Michelle Panos in the Oori Game Reserve (Riverside Estates) to approach Myrna Thomas, Director of the SOS Training Village, for permission to use the adults’ soccer field.

South of Johannesburg : the Cinderlla story?

Andrew Barker and Clem Kourie are marketing the newly established Klipriviersberg Conservancy.  The area is quite extensive, mixed use prevails and the plan is ambitious.  Andrew talks about the South of Johannesburg as playing Cinderella to the Northern and Western aspects of Johannesburg.

Fences or hedgerows

If one were to travel to the English countryside the first impression that you would notice is the interconnected patchwork of hedgerows separating paddocks and cultivated farm lands.  While these hedgerows make an attractive feature of the undulating English countryside, they were established to serve as “fences” for the control of livestock.  They also serve as valuable wildlife habitats and migration corridors for wild animals, birds, butterflies and other pollinators. They are so valuable that The Hedgerow Regulations were passed in June 1997 making it an offence to destroy them.

Gekco on Food Gardens, Permaculture and outreach

The Greater Kyalami Conservancy (GEKCO) has deployed the services of John Nzira in an outreach programme.  The programme was intended to foster an awareness of sustainable practices, and provide food security.

Two Conservancies update "...of the Month"

Hartebeestfontein Conservancy is adding a record a month to a database on indigenous trees, particularly those that thrive in the Magaliesberg Mountains. This is part of a drive to promote planting indigenous trees in the Conservancy. 

The information is compiled by Sue Oxborrow, and can be found on the Hartebeestfontein Conservancy site.

In Kwa-Zulu Natal, Nikki Brighton writes about widflowers.  Her "Flower of the Month" for the Dargle Conservancy is featured on the Conservancy's website.
