The constitution is done. The committee appointed. The conservancy has a name. Time to roll up sleeves and get to work...

Pay regular attention to:

  • Mailing lists - always use the attendance register to check that details are correct. Ask residents to remember to let you know when their contact details change.
  • Write a monthly newsletter. Members enjoy interesting snippets. This is also a good vehicle to share important news.
  • Fire breaks - a legal requirement in rural areas, and a very important task in environmental management.
  • Monitor rivers, streams and wetlands. Clean up and weed as required.
  • Promote local business and tourism. Sustainable means economically viable too!
  • Update and revisit species lists from time to time - think about birds, amphibians, reptiles, insects, spiders, trees, grasses, mammals.
  • Frequently send information to increase awareness and knowledge - include subjects such as alien plants, veld management, environmental law, local authority bylaws, treating injured wildlife, animal behavior, useful plants, indigenous trees, etc.
  • Patrol for snares and traps, and safely remove these.
  • Clear up where illegal dumping or litter occurs. Involve the local authority to limit this harmful activity.
