These ideas have been successfully used to engage with children.

  • Colouring competitions with a nature theme - popular with the younger children
  • Crafting - decoupage with pressed leaves and flower, making decorations with seed pods and greenery; weaving with cleared reeds from wetlands
  • "Treasure" hunts - and the treasures can be anything in the environment; think about a raft on a stream, a striking tree, a termite heap, a spider hole, and end with a reward when children have found all the clues along the way.
  • Frogs, spiders, and snakes - spotting, watching and releasing; get a knowledgeable guide who knows how to engage and involve children; make sure you have first aid kit
  • Survival - camping in the great outdoors! Have the children prepare their own meal, boil water for filling water bottles, make a safe camp fire, protect their tent against the wind and rain, read a map.

More unusual ideas:

  • A Pet Parade where young children showcase their pets and information is shared about caring for pets
