A fallen or injured Bat

Nigel Fernsby recently chatted to a "batty" crowd.  The talk was arranged by the Rhenosterspruit Nature Conservancy, and kindly hosted by Alpha Conference Centre.

If you have ever wondered what to do if you find an injured or fallen bat, here are some pointers:

  • Bats are territorial so releasing bats is tricky and may fail
  • The mother will pair with a youngster, teaching it to hunt and fly.  If a young bat is on the ground, the best you can do is to place it on a branch to give some elevation - it may then swoop away more easily than from the ground.
And if you are fortunate enough to know of a cave of bats, please do not disturb them.  These amazing little creature have to conserve their energy so precisely as they weigh mere grams.  They rest in the daylight hours in a kind of semi-hibernation to conserve energy.  If you disturb them, their "flight in fright" could sap vital energy needing to forage and feed at night.
