Some comments for clarity
"Environment" as a word has disappeared from the Department's title, but not function. I was pleased to hear firmly from Mr Madire Malepe that environment is very much on the department's agenda. Nature Reserve status does not imply "fully under State control". It is however the highest legal protection afforded to land, and requires a stringent management plan, the output of which will be audit by the management of the reserve (most likely, and usually, a state agency) On tax concessions, these are not huge unless you are putting your land aside for conservation in an altruist manner. If you run a business on your land, many of your expenses are already included in your income statement. What is important to note is that you can claim a percentage of your expenses for conservation against an income not related to conservation, but the activity has to occur on or neighbouring the conservation land. The analogy used was that your Dental Surgery in Cape Town could not have its tax debt offset by conservation expenses for your farm in Tzaneen. Thank you for staring this conversation Ivan. It will be useful.
